Vintage Lady in Gold - Roses and Reading - Mixed Media Canvas

I am very excited to share this project with you.
It marks a milestone for me.

This is my first Mixed Media canvas.
I've wanted to try for a long time but Autumn at Sew Paper Paint
has finally inspired me enough to give it a shot.
Have you noticed I've been practicing my splatters of late?
Getting used to a little mess?

Emphasis on the little, but still...
I'm working out of the box.

Just to prove it, here's a photo of the canvas board
before everything got added on top.  Look at that.  I felt liberated and
frightened at the same time.
But I even got up the nerve to spray directly onto the canvas
after that.  Right there, onto the board.
Oh, I felt bold!

I sprayed gold Glimmer mist onto a French text stamp
and used that on the doily.  I also did some scribbles here and there with
metallic gold oil pastel.  It has a nice sheen.

Here is the finished canvas board:

Just like with my Vintage Millinery card, coloring this lady in brown
made me think of my grandmother.  But for some reason, this lady
seemed much friendlier--one I would like to visit a bookstore with.
And yes, coloring her in browns I identified a little bit.

This is my first mixed-media canvas, as I said earlier--
and I did it in these colors so that it can go along with the accent
colors in my MBR.  Although a lot of the steps were completely
out of my comfort zone, I feel pleased with having made the effort.

The small rose was one that had been floating around without a friend
and needed a home anyway.  But it was FAR too bright yellow for me, so I sprayed it
with white glimmer mist and then covered in white embossing powder.
That lightened it up pretty well so that it no longer overpowers.

The mushroom flower from Recollections was also the wrong color--it was blue.
Gold glimmer mist changed that.

I also had fun with these gold seed beads, which J took off of some trim
he wanted to use, and I hated to waste them.  I think they're a little like
metallic microbeads.

Coral and Gold: Fresh In Bloom Congrats

This is not exactly the card I had planned,
but while J and I were crafting together late this afternoon there was a
juice spill that...well... you know.
Juice and paper don't mix.
That card was halfway done, but nevermind.
Here's what I came up with from the salvageable pieces.
(J felt so badly about it - but it was a good chance to show
how we can solve problems if we stay calm!)

These die-cut Papertrey blooms are colored with watercolor pencils.
As a matter of fact, it's a set I inherited from my grandfather.

I used the ZIG glue pen around the edges of the blossom and leaf
to add a nice embossed gold edge.  I also embossed the Altenew splatters.

Here are the challenges:

ColourQ #343: (2nd entry)

(I've just oriented the card base horizontally, rather than vertically.)

Emboss, Image, Die Cut

Materials Used on this Card:
Cardstock {Rustic white, Berry sorbet - Papertrey Ink}
Patterned paper {DCWV}
Textured gold paper {the Paper Company}
Stamps {Papertrey Ink, Altenew}
Ink {Archival black - Ranger}
Gold embossing powder {Recollections}
Sequins {Doodlebug Design}

Aqua Key Lime Blossoms - Freestyle Collage Card

I love a great all-occasion card now and then,
especially when I'm able to either leave it as-is or add an appropriate
sentiment stamp later on.
This card in an aqua/teal/green and lime color scheme does just that for me.
Versatile.
Vibrant.

I am loving these layered blossom stamps from Altenew.
A real treat.  I know we're seeing them everywhere but really,
who can have too many florals?

Here are the challenges:

Sunday Stamps #127: Color challenge

Pile it On #109: Tic Tac Toe
Stripes, Die Cut, Bird

Catch the Bug May Photo Inspiration:
This is a meadowlark.  It's related to a thrush,
and the bird on my fussy-cut label element at the top of the card
is one of these two.  I can't *exactly* tell you which because it's not colorized and
it's probably been stylized too.  Still... you get why the naturalist in me
wants to make the point...
I'll be back with a TRUE meadowlark later ;)

Fashionable Stamping #111: Blots and Splashes
3rd entry - stamped flower focal

Materials Used on this Card:
Cardstock {Aqua mist - Papertrey Ink}
Patterned papers {Lost & Found II - My Mind's Eye}
Stamps & Dies {Altenew}
Dye and pigment inks {Papertrey Ink, Colorbox}
Distress Spray {Peeled Paint - Tim Holtz / Ranger}
Edge punch, large corner rounder {Martha Stewart}
Light green gems {Prima}
Trim, twine {stash}

Vintage Millinery - Fashionable Lady in Deep Blue - Family History

Working with this lovely vintage lady has given me a chance
to reconnect with my maternal grandmother, long since passed.

You see, my grandmother was exceptionally good at colorizing photos.
I'm told she was an illustrator before she married.
It's made me smile many times when, in my family full of scientists,
I'm told that I might just get my artistic bent in part from her,
as well as from both my paternal grandparents.
So while coloring a number of vintage portraits from The Graphics Fairy
a few weeks ago, I was thinking of grandmother.
It's the small ways in which we connect with those we love who have left,
especially as our memories have a tendency to fade if we do not
keep them bright.
Family history can be so much more than just a rainy-day activity.
It can be a way of thinking,
a way of life in which we are mindful of the generations who came before us.
A way of finding opportunities to tell our children about their ancestors
so that they have a sense of where they come from.
I think that builds strong roots, confidence, poise even.
It is a marvelous gift we can give them, if we take the time.

So, with the throwback of memory,
here is a classy vintage lady to remind you, perhaps, of a time gone by
and maybe even those you have known who lived it indeed.

I love the way she looks at you, as if she knows something...

Here are the challenges:

Deep Ocean Challenge #129: Shabby Chic or Vintage
Vintage lady image, Millinery

(echo! echo! :)

Cards in Envy: Deep Blue Challenge
Yes, this card does extend past the edges, but the card is 5x5
and I have a 6x6 kraft envy for it.  No problem.

One Stitch at a Time #263: Stitching, Real or Faux
You can't imagine my Viking would forgive me if I did faux stitching,
now could you?  Especially when it's right beside me, watching all the time! ;)
ALWAYS best to keep the Husqvarna happy,
or else Ragnarok might ensue.
Probably starting with some wicked thread tension...
But I digress ;)

613 Avenue #178: ATG

Materials Used on this Card:
Cardstock {kraft, Enchanted Evening - Papertrey Ink}
Patterned papers {K & Company}
Vintage graphic {The Graphics Fairy}
Glimmer Mist {gold - Tattered Angels}
Stamp {100 Proof Press}
Stickers, pearls {The Paper Studio}
Doily lace edge punch {Martha Stewart}
Copic markers and Prismacolors

A view of the finished inside...
I've used patterned vellum from The Paper Company for a nice writing insert
and stamped/heat embossed it with
a Victorian lady with parasol image from 100 Proof Press.

Beachcombing Card - Boy with Sailboat At the Seaside

I'm home with a sick little guy today,
so while he's coloring and resting his voice, and we wait
for his brother to get home from church so we can read all together,
I thought I'd try to catch up on posting some cards that I made before
the unexpected vacation last week!

This particular one was a lot of fun to make,
as I was thinking about beach-combing and the hodge podge of discoveries
to be made in tidal pools and along beach walks.
These treasure-finding expeditions by the sea enchant children and adults alike.

With the stitching, I like to sometimes mix it up between zigzags and straight lines,
or only stitch a part of the design.  This way it doesn't get too boxy or simply look
like an outline--it gets to be part of the layout in a more meaningful way.

You can see here how I used clear Gloss on the ocean and tidal pool
to accentuate the water.
In general I try to never cover the entire surface, as that ruins the interest
and also tends to cause a lot of buckling.

I can almost feel the salt air blowing.

Here are the challenges:

Now I know I haven't used gems.  I wanted to go for a more natural sparkle on this
card with the glass gems and idea of sparkles on the water in summer sun.

Suffer the Children to Come to Me

I've used Twine, image, and a circle tag

Materials Used on this Card:
Cardstock {Kraft, Ripe Avocado - Papertrey Ink}
Patterned papers {Making Memories, K & Company}
Vintage image {The Graphics Fairy}
Glossy Accents {Ranger}
Sentiment and circle frame stamps {Papertrey Ink}
Circle nestabilities tag dies {Spellbinders}
Palmetto Stamp {Stamp Museum - this rubber is 14+ years old}
Distress and pigment inks - for palmetto and background
Shell and coral stickers, wooden spool {The Paper Studio}
Wooden button trim, burlap ribbon, cotton twine, glass gems {stash}

A view of the finished inside:

Stamped onto 220-grit sandpaper for some very interesting texture.
Fully-lined 5x7 card with cream-colored calligraphic parchment
for lots of writing room.

Thank you so much for visiting!
